Matthew 16:1-20

Jesus rebukes the Pharisees and Sadducees for seeking signs, instructs His disciples on the dangers of the teachings of the Pharisees and Sadducees, and affirms Peter’s recognition that He is the Messiah, the Son of the living God. Jesus tells Peter (petros) he is the little pebble, but on the rock (petra) of Christ the church will be built. He promises the keys of the Kingdom to those who understand this and recognize Christ as the Messiah as revealed by the will of the Father.
